I don’t remember when I listened this song for the first time. Perhaps in 1977, when the movie 'Shankar Hussain' was released. Also I don’t remember when I listened this song for the last time. Perhaps I few minutes before. It doesn't matter. There’s no difference. Times stops when the song is played.

Bin Phere Hum Tere : Bin phere hum tere

Bin Phere Hum Tere, directed by Rajat Rakshit, was released sometimes in 1979. I don’t know much about the movie. I haven’t seen it. But this song, sung by Kishore, is very close to my heart since the date it was released. I don’t know why?

Seema : Tu pyar ka sagar hai

One of my fevourite bhajans (devotional songs) from Hindi cinema….. or perhaps the most favourite one… Pyar ka Sagar… from the movie Seema which was released in 1955, much before I was born. But the song still fascinates me. Beautifully sung by Manna Dey, the best classical singer of Indian Film Industry; written by Shailendra with excellence; and the music was scored by Masters Shankar & Jaikishan.

तू प्यार का सागर है तेरी एक बूंद के प्यासे हम

लौटा जो दिया तूने चले जायेंगे जहां से हम।

घायल मन का पागल पंछी उड़ने को बेक़रार

पंख हैं कोमल आँख है धुंधली जाना है सागर पार

Khamoshi : Tum Pukar Lo

Khamoshi (1969), one of the gems of the Golden Era of Indian Cinema, belongs to my toddler days. I watched it very late in life. But its songs were always around to mix honey in my soul. The song – tum pukar lo – sung by Hemant Da, is not less than the Koh-e Noor in diamonds. The music is also composed by him. This world stops for me, whenever this song it played……

Tum pukar lo, tumhara intezaar hai,
Khaab chun rahi hai raat, beqaraar hai.

Honth pe liye huye, dil ki baat hum,
Jaagte rahenge aur, kitni raat hum,
Mukhtasar si baat hai, tumsey pyaar hai….

Sujata : Jaltey HaiN Jiskey Liye

Sujata was released in 1959. Directed by the legendry director Bimal Roy, this film was based on the caste system in India. It earned an entry into the 1960’s Cannes Film Festival. It also bagged Filmfares for Best Actress (Nutan, the ever beautiful), Best Director (Bimal Roy), Best Movie and the Best Story (Subodh Ghosh).

It’s difficult to find a person who likes Hindi songs but doesn’t love this melody sung by the Padma Bhushan Sri Talat Mahmood sahib, the man with a silky voice. Music is done by Sachindev Burman and the lyricist is Majrooh Sultanpuri.

जलते हैं जिस के लिये, तेरी आँखों के दिये
ढूंढ लाया हूँ वही, गीत मैं तेरे लिये ॥

दर्द बन के जो मेरे दिल में रहा, ढल ना सका

Aah : Ye Shaam Ki Tanhaiyan

"Aah" is an Hindi feature film which was released in 1953. The release date was perhaps 22 March, though I am not very sure about it. It was directed by Raja Nawathe for Raj Kapoor, the Great Showman of Indian Cinema. I have seen this film long time ago. The film is full of melodious songs. Music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. Lyrics were written by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. This one , I’m writing here, is one of my favourites from the movie, is sung by Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar.

ये शाम की तन्हाईयाँ, ऐसे में तेरा ग़म।
पत्ते कहीं खड़के, हवा आई, तो चौंके हम॥

जिस राह से तुम आने को थे,
उसके निशां भी मिटने लगे,
आए न तुम, सौ सौ दफा आए गए मौसम॥

सीने से लगा तेरी याद को,

Aah (1953)

Babul : Chhod Baabul ka Ghar

One of my most favourite ‘vidaai songs’. Vidaai, not from babul’s house but from this mortal world. There are two versions of this song in the movie ‘Babul’ which was released in 1950. The first one is sung by Lata Mangeshkar which is actually a bride’s vidaai (departure) song. But this second version belongs to the best Blue Mood Artist of Indian Film Industry – Talat Mahmood. The last stanza – aao, sajan khade hain dwaar – is sung by the greatest Mohammad Rafi.

Sazaa, a film by Fali Mistry was released in 1951. Our all times favourite Dev Anand was in main lead with Nimmi & Shyama. I don’t know much about the movie, neither I’ve watched it. But I love this song which is sung by Lata…

I saw the movie – Hamari Yaad Aayegi – during my childhood. I don’t remember the movie now, but still remember how mesmerized I was, when this song – Kabhi tanhaiiyon mey yun – was played on the screen...

Kaagaz ke Phool : Waqt ne Kiya Kya Hansi Sitam

The movie Kaaghaz Ke Phool was released on 2 January 1959. This beautiful movie is full of several beautiful songs. Waqt ne kiya kya hansi sitam, Tum rahe na tum ham rahe na ham - is one of my most favourite songs ever.
