Seema : Tu pyar ka sagar hai

One of my fevourite bhajans (devotional songs) from Hindi cinema….. or perhaps the most favourite one… Pyar ka Sagar… from the movie Seema which was released in 1955, much before I was born. But the song still fascinates me. Beautifully sung by Manna Dey, the best classical singer of Indian Film Industry; written by Shailendra with excellence; and the music was scored by Masters Shankar & Jaikishan.

तू प्यार का सागर है तेरी एक बूंद के प्यासे हम

लौटा जो दिया तूने चले जायेंगे जहां से हम।

घायल मन का पागल पंछी उड़ने को बेक़रार

पंख हैं कोमल आँख है धुंधली जाना है सागर पार

अब तू ही इसे समझा राह भूले थे कहाँ से हम।

इधर झूम के गाये ज़िन्दगी उधर है मौत खड़ी

कोई क्या जाने कहाँ है सीमा उलझन आन पड़ी

Sujata : Jaltey HaiN Jiskey Liye

Sujata was released in 1959. Directed by the legendry director Bimal Roy, this film was based on the caste system in India. It earned an entry into the 1960’s Cannes Film Festival. It also bagged Filmfares for Best Actress (Nutan, the ever beautiful), Best Director (Bimal Roy), Best Movie and the Best Story (Subodh Ghosh).

It’s difficult to find a person who likes Hindi songs but doesn’t love this melody sung by the Padma Bhushan Sri Talat Mahmood sahib, the man with a silky voice. Music is done by Sachindev Burman and the lyricist is Majrooh Sultanpuri.

जलते हैं जिस के लिये, तेरी आँखों के दिये
ढूंढ लाया हूँ वही, गीत मैं तेरे लिये ॥

दर्द बन के जो मेरे दिल में रहा, ढल ना सका
जादू बन के तेरी आँखों में रुका, चल ना सका
